ANGE POSTECOGLOU has paid tribute to Rangers legend Walter Smith, saying that his greatness transcended the rivalries between the Old Firm clubs.
The Celtic manager was saddened by news of Smith’s death yesterday at the age of 73 following a battle with illness, and although he never met the former Ibrox manager, he was acutely aware of his achievements.
Over and above his footballing accomplishments though, Postecoglou recognised that it was his qualities as a man that made him a respected figure right across Scottish football and beyond.
“When I heard the new I was trying to remember if we’d ever crossed paths,” Postecoglou said. “I don’t think we ever did.
“But I’m well aware of his achievements as a manager at club level and national team level.
“He was so well respected. From my perspective, you understand the impact he had on Scottish football.
“Just listening to some of the tributes this morning, you see just how highly regarded he was as a man as much as anything else.
“It didn’t matter who he managed. When people were talking about him in such reverent tones it’s because he was a great man as well as being great at his profession.
“It’s a very sad day. My condolences go to his family and his loved ones. It’s a sad day for Scottish football in general.”
