DEREK JOHNSTONE paid tribute to Walter Smith this morning as he called for a statue in his memory.

Ibrox legend Smith sadly passed away this morning at the age of 73.

The former Light Blues and Scotland manager led Rangers to 10 top-flight titles, five Scottish Cups and six League Cups as well as to the UEFA Cup final in 2008.

Johnstone played under Smith and he revealed the respect that was demanded when speaking to Sky Sports News.

He said: "He had very few enemies, if any at all.

"He was a gentleman and gave people respect. He would never run anyone down, that just wasn’t in his game, even the players themselves.

"He very rarely raised his voice, but mind you I could tell you when he did raise it. The players knew about it, when they weren’t doing their job.

"The one word he had in world football, anyone that knew him, was respect. They respected him.

"It’s a sad day for the football club. It wouldn’t surprise me, I’ve never heard anything, but if anyone deserves another statue to go up here at Ibrox Stadium it’s Walter Smith."
