The BBC and Netflix have announced the joint commission of a new factual drama about the Pan Am Flight 103 explosion over the town of Lockerbie in 1988.

The programme will also explore the joint-US-Scottish investigation into the disaster which sought to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The new six-part show called Lockerbie is being written by acclaimed screenwriter Jonathan Lee with two episodes being written by Scottish screenwriter Gillian Roger Park.

Of the new venture, Jonathan Lee said: “The Pan Am 103 disaster and the global manhunt it spawned was a defining event in world history – one that contains so many instances of resilience and courage that deserve to be honoured and understood. It’s a privilege to write this story for the screen.”

Executive producer Adam Morane-Griffiths added: "I’ve been working on this project for seven years, so it’s very dear to my heart. The investigation was extraordinary, as was the trial, and I’m beyond excited to work with such incredible partners bringing it to life.”

What happened to Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie?

The Lockerbie disaster occurred on December 21, 1988, when Pan Am Flight 103 flew over the Scottish town of Lockerbie while en route from Heathrow to JFK airports.

As the passenger plane flew over the town, a bomb in the hold of the aircraft exploded, killing 270 people, including 43 British citizens.

In 2001, a Libyan intelligence officer was jailed for life after being found guilty of 270 counts of murder in connection with the bombing.

He was later released in 2009 after being diagnosed with prostate cancer before dying in 2012.
