Eyewitnesses have described the moment a bus crashed into a block of flats in Paisley.

Five people are in hospital after the McGills bus veered off the road at lunchtime and into Hamilton Court flats.

It is understood from locals at the scene that the bus was travelling along Craw Road before it veered off the road onto pavement through a path and into the block of flats.

Glasgow Times:

Ian Ward, 71, who lives in neighbouring Calside Court, said: "I heard the crash just after lunchtime when I was in my flat. 

"I heard two double bangs and looked through the window, and could see blue lights."

He added: "A black Audi crashed into the block about 14 months ago. It went right through the laundrette.

"I'm surprised at what has happened with the bus though."

It is understood that residents have not been evacuated from the flats and many were watching the 999 crews carry out their investigations from their balconies.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Emergency services are in attendance following a report of a crash involving a bus on Calside, Paisley which happened around 12.20pm on Wednesday, March 13. 

"Five people have been taken to hospital for treatment and enquiries are ongoing.

"A number of road closures are in place including Calside Avenue, Polsons Crescent, Craw Road and Alexandra Gate.

"Drivers are asked to avoid the area."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for McGill's Buses added: "This is a live incident and McGill's personnel are in attendance to establish the detail of the crash.

"We cannot comment further at this stage."
