The council has issued an update on a major roadworks project that has been branded 'chaos' by locals.

Work has been ongoing at Canniesburn Toll in Bearsden since July as part of an improvement project, resulting in multiple road closures and diversions via residential streets.

Now East Dunbartonshire Council has confirmed that the latest phase of works, which we reported had been extended due to 'unforeseen issues', are now complete.

This section of the road has now reopened and diversions have been lifted.

Glasgow Times:

However, the next phase of road closures will begin on Monday, March 18 at 6am until 6pm on Monday, April 22.

This will result in a closure at the roundabout between Switchback Road and northbound and southbound.

A diversion via Roman Drive will be in place for access to Drymen Road/Switchback (southbound) from Maryhill Road.

Alternative routes are via A81 Milngavie Road, Roman Road, A809 Drymen Road, and Canniesburn Toll roundabout.

The northbound and southbound carriageways of the A739 Switchback Road will remain open at all times.

Access to the closed section of the road will only be maintained for vehicles engaged in the works. There will be no access through the closed sections for emergency service vehicles.

As part of the works lane closures will also be in place on the approaches to Canniesburn Toll Roundabout on the A739 Switchback Road (northbound), the A809 Drymen Road and MacFarlane Road, Bearsden and also on sections of Canniesburn Toll Roundabout, which will remain open.

The road closures have been a heated topic of discussion on social media, with one Bearsden local calling it 'chaos' and another 'hellish'.

Another said: "At least we can see progress. Hopefully, it will be all completed soon."

We previously reported that a local councillor had hit out at the roadworks, claiming that they were “programmed to take months longer than they should” at the expense of “inconvenience and aggravation” for residents and commuters.

Opposition councillor Vaughan Moody, who represents Bearsden South, said the project had left those living nearby fed-up with drivers using their residential streets as a diversion.

Stuart Clanachan, who lives in nearby Ballater Drive, told the Glasgow Times about the impact it is having on residents.

He said: “Since the work started months ago, we have had increased traffic using the streets as a rat run to get to the Switchback but since the on-ramp from the roundabout to the Switchback is closed, we have had all traffic from Bearsden and Milngavie pass through our streets seven days a week, 12 hours per day."
