Supermarket giants Lidl has revealed a 25ft mural in Glasgow made from more than 30,000 bottle caps to celebrate its bottle return scheme.

Inspired by Botticelli, the scheme saw a total of 253,000 containers of PET plastic and aluminium recycled since its pilot launch last month, which will run until August.

The mural has been set up in the city’s West End, in collaboration with mural artist Smug and Yardworks, a globally recognised street and graffiti programme at SWG3.

Marco Ivone, regional director for Scotland at Lidl, said: "Since launching last month, we’ve had an overwhelming response to our pilot return scheme and ‘Bottlecelli’ is an opportunity for us to give something back to the Glasgow community.

"We know our customers share our passion for sustainability, and saving money, and we hope even more people take advantage of the schemes as we continue to invest in ways to ensure recycling is as convenient as possible."

The mural's base is free-hand painted and the artwork is embellished with bottle caps that are already recycled and to be recycled.

As part of the scheme, customers receive a 5p reward for each eligible item they return which can either be redeemed against their shopping or donated to Lidl’s charity partner, The STV Children’s appeal.

Lidl has additionally committed a £2,500 donation to the charity for the bottle tops used in the mural's creation.

The company expects the trial scheme to recycle at least 10.5 tonnes of plastic and aluminium material each month, and is aiming for the materials to be reused to manufacture new plastic and aluminium products.

Laura Frood, engagement and participation lead at SWG3 Glasgow, said: "It’s been a pleasure working alongside Lidl, Sam (Smug) and the wider team here at SWG3 to create ‘Bottlecelli’ over the past month.

Glasgow Times:

"The mural looks fantastic and is testament to the talented team of artists and students who were able to make art from waste bottle tops.

"Beyond the mural, the partnership has also seen investment into our Yardworks Programme and street arts festival which will take place between May 4 and 5."

The Lidl Return Scheme is running for a trial period in participating Glasgow stores until August 11.
