The artistic director of Cirque du Soleil’s Ovo said her first step when she comes to the city next month is to ‘grab a whisky’.
Lydia Harper, who has been in her current role since 2022 after joining Cirque as a performer in 2015, said: “Oh my gosh, I love Glasgow. I can’t wait to come back.
“This will be my first time as director in Glasgow, and I think when I get there, I’ll just have a whisky in one hand and a burger in the other and it’ll be amazing.
“Getting whisky is step one when I get to the city.
“There aren’t many Brits in the production, so I’ve got a lot of pressure on me. I think step one – whisky in Glasgow – is going to set us up for success.”
Whisky aside, Glasgow is also the first place where Lydia ever saw the production she is now directing.
She said: “I first saw Ovo when it was in Glasgow last time which was in about 2018. That was my first insight into the show.
“I couldn’t have possibly imagined that I would be bringing the show back myself all these years later.”
The show follows a ladybug who captures the eye of an unusual insect who has moved into the neighbourhood and the two instantly fall in love.
From high-level acrobatics to a live band playing the show’s soundtrack, the production has been described by Lydia as a show which sees ‘what insects would be like if they could do circus skills’.
Lydia said: “Ovo is a really accessible, fun, family-friendly, colourful, absolutely bonkers world of what might happen if insects could do circus skills.
“We’ve got incredibly high-level acrobatics, Olympians to work on the show with us and we blend that together with colours and music that takes on a Brazilian influence.
“We also have a live band which plays the soundtrack to the show.
“For me, it is just the most fun show. There isn’t a complicated world in which you have to try and immerse yourself but is rather a colourful image of entertainment. It takes something ordinary and makes it extraordinary.
“I’ve been working really hard to make sure it is brilliant for all of the audiences that pile in.”
The show will be coming to the OVO Hydro in the West End of the city on Thursday, March 21 and will run until Sunday, March 24, 2024.
