An American couple travelled almost 4,000 miles and got married at a Glasgow fire station.

Amanda Brooke Monroe, 38, and James Matthew Ownbey, 42, are both firefighters at Brunswick in the state of Georgia, USA.

After arriving in Scotland for a holiday, they tied the knot at Calton Fire Station today.

The husband said: “The day was perfect. It was better than what anyone could have imagined.

“We’re still surprised with how amazing it all turned out."

The couple chose the destination to celebrate Amanda's Scottish heritage and learn more about the country.

They decided to hold the event at the station as a special nod to their jobs, which is equally important to them and is also where they met.

Amanda said: "I've been in the army reserve for 15 years and I was deployed in Kuwait and Uzbekistan. My lieutenant was a firefighter and he told me 'It's the best job in the world, you need to try it when you get home'.

"When I got home, six months later I was in the academy.

"The most important thing is helping people.

"There are a lot of positives and negatives.

"When someone calls us, it could be the worst day of their lives. It's not about the T-shirt, the title, it's about the people."

James said: "It sounds so cliche but being able to make those differences where you don't necessarily get credit, it's rewarding.

"I love helping people and being unseen doing it."

Surrounded by their international colleagues, they exchanged vows before getting a tour of the East End building.

For the rest of their trip, the newlyweds will explore more of Scotland, which they praised for its hospitality.

They were especially thankful for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, who lent a helping hand in the preparation and during the ceremony.

Group commander Garry Marshall said: “It was an honour to oversee this ceremony for our fellow firefighters and make their day as memorable as possible.

"We wish them all the happiness in the world.”
