A planning hearing will be needed to determine whether an application to build 48 homes in Bellshill is to be approved.

The application, from Wilson Developments, proposes a mixture of terraced and semi-detached houses and cottage flats to be built on a site at Reema Road Industrial Estate.

Although the proposals contradict the local development plan, council officers recommended approving the application on the basis that a justifiable exception could be made, and also due to the importance of providing new affordable housing in North Lanarkshire.

However, the number of objections received, including from Councillor Angela Campbell, Bairdisland View Residents Association, the owners of the former Tata Steel site and Mossend International Railfreight Park, meant that the application met all requirements for a hearing to take place.

Members of the planning committee were therefore advised there were no reasonable grounds to deny the request for a hearing so agreed unanimously that this would take place before any decision could be reached.
