An incident on a major motorway sparked a police response over the weekend.

The M77 was closed in both directions on Saturday evening due to a 'police incident', according to Traffic Scotland.

Cops confirmed that they had been alerted to a 'disturbance' on the hard shoulder near junction one southbound.

When officers arrived, there was no trace of anyone on the hard shoulder.

Investigations are now being carried out.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.50pm on Saturday, July 22, we received a report of a disturbance on the hard shoulder of the M77, southbound near junction one.

“Officers attended and there was no trace of anyone or risk to the general public.

“The road was closed while enquiries were carried out.

"It reopened northbound around 6.20pm and was fully open around 7.10pm.

“An investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
