The council is encouraging people to apply for new Taxi Operator Licences.

This is to boost the number of vehicles available locally in East Dunbartonshire.

Applicants are not required to have a car or insurance before they apply, and East Dunbartonshire Council said this can be sorted once it is confirmed a licence will be granted.

Applicants may apply for up to two Operator Licences.

Full details of vehicles, including registration number, insurance information, and proof of ownership are to be submitted after confirmation has been given that all checks are complete.

Glasgow Times: After initial consultation with representatives of the trade, the council has put forward options

A separate Taxi Driver Licence from the East Dunbartonshire Council is required for anyone intending to drive a taxi.

Councillor Gordan Low, convener of the Policy and Resources Committee and council leader, said: "We're keen to increase the number of taxis available locally – helping to support residents, businesses and schools who rely on their vital services.

"Work is taking place to support the trade and encourage potential new operators, including flexibility as regards vehicle ownership and insurance before a licence is granted. If you're interested, please get in touch and find out more."
