Glaswegians are being urged to join a national challenge to tackle Scotland's rising litter concern.

The annual #SpringCleanScotland 2024, organised by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful, starts on March 15 and runs until April 28.

Last year saw more than 30,000 Scots participate, equipping themselves with litter pickers, bags and gloves, and contributing positively to their neighbourhoods.

Barry Fisher, chief executive at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “We’re so excited for #SpringCleanScotland 2024 to begin this week, and it would be fantastic for as many people as possible from Glasgow to get involved.

“We know 85% of people agree that they want to see more efforts to prevent litter in their area. It starts with us.

“No longer can we wait for someone else to pick up the litter we might walk past every day – so we are inviting everyone to organise a litter pick with friends, family, workmates or alone, or to join an event registered on our Clean Up Scotland map.

“Every action, however small, will help us reverse the litter emergency.”

Neil Lovelock, project manager at Glasgow EcoTrust, said the national spring clean is an opportunity for people to get involved in their communities and improve their streets, greenspaces and nature.

He added: "This year we have also created the #YorkhillToYoker challenge which will focus on litter picks along the National Cycle Network and connections to local parks.

"The area runs along the north banks of the river Clyde so we will also help prevent marine litter. Taking part in a litter pick is a great way to meet your neighbours and boost your health and wellbeing! They are great for people, place and planet."

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said there are more than 25 community clean-ups due to take place across Glasgow during this year’s Spring Clean Scotland campaign.

She added: "The council’s Neighbourhood Improvement Team and our amazing network of Neighbourhood Improvement Volunteers hold community clean-ups all year round and have supported this campaign since 2009.

"It is a great event which fosters community spirit and civic pride - bringing people together to tackle litter and improve their local environment.”

Keep Scotland Beautiful are collaborating with Keep Britain Tidy and Keep Wales Tidy to support the Great British Spring Clean.
