The casting for Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black which is set to return to Glasgow's Theatre Royal next month has been announced.

The play, which will run from March 26 to 30, will see Malcolm James and Mark Hawkins star as Arthur Kipps and The Actor respectively.

Mr James's earlier work in The Woman in Black, saw him playing Arthur Kipps on a UK Tour, followed by a stint at the Fortune Theatre.

His other West End credits include include The Mousetrap at St Martin’s Theatre, Volpone at the National Theatre, and on-screen in HBO’s My Dinner with Herve and BBC’s Doctors.

On radio he has been heard on several afternoon dramas on BBC Radio 4.

This will not be Mr Hawkins' first performance as The Actor in The Woman in Black, having previously taken on the role at the Fortune Theatre and Madinat Theatre.

His other theatre credits include The Railway Children at Kings Cross Theatre, Julius Caesar at The Globe, and the international tour of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

He has also appeared on television, in HBO’s The Nevers and ITV’s Vera.

Also in the cast are Jon de Ville, set to be the understudy for Arthur Kipps, and Dominic Price, the understudy for The Actor.

The Woman in Black made a prominent mark on West End's history, performing more than 13,000 times and seen by over seven million people in the UK.

The play celebrated its 30th anniversary in the West End in June 2019 with a gala performance.

The story, a lawyer's obsession with a curse which he believes a woman in black cast onto his family, began as a Christmas production in a Scarborough pub in 1987.

After encouraging reviews, it found a home in the West End run, lodging at the Fortune on June 7, 1989.

The producers have kept ticket prices affordable for students and young people, and plan to continue this approach in the future.

The Woman in Black is directed by Robin Herford, with designs by Michael Holt and lighting by Kevin Sleep.
