Unions have sent a message to councillors ahead of their meeting to set a budget for Glasgow.

The main public sector unions in the city protested outside the City Chambers calling for a no cuts budget to be set and for a joint campaign to demand more money for Glasgow to protect jobs and services.

Unison, GMB, Unite and the EIS staged the event 24 hours before the meeting which will see councillors decide how to plug a £107m spending gap.

Shona Thomson of the GMB, said: “This is every year, year after year. The message from this demo is clear.

Glasgow Times:

“Firstly, to the Scottish Government, Glasgow, Scotland’s biggest city needs a fair deal from the Scottish Government and it is not getting it.

“To our local politicians: We are in danger of having a Tweedledee, Tweedledum debate. Where local politicians campaign about who is best at making the cuts.

“These cuts have consequences. Cuts mean our streets become dirtier, our schools less clean, our parks unkempt, our public buildings shabby our vulnerable people less cared for.”

Chris Sermanni, Unison, Branch Secretary, said: “We are here again to demand politicians stand up and fight for the people of Glasgow.

“Services are on their knees and budgets cut to the bone.”

He said when the health and social care services are added, the city is facing £150m cuts over the next three years.

The representative said: “ That’s not sustainable. We call on the politicians to set a one-year legal no cuts budget to give space for a campaign to fight for the money Glasgow requires.”

Glasgow City Council meets on Thursday morning to set a budget for the 2024/25 and is expected to pass a budget that sees council tax frozen and the Council accept the funding from the Scottish Government to do so.

It will get £15.4m from a pot of £144m across the country to freeze the tax compensating councils with the amount had they increased it by 5%.
