Renfrewshire Council has confirmed there are no plans for the return of its fireworks event in Paisley.

The annual display has not taken place since 2019. The event was scrapped in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last year, the local authority did not reveal why the display did not go ahead.

Today, a spokesperson for Renfrewshire Council said: "The Paisley fireworks event has not taken place since 2019 and there are no plans for it to return.

"We took a decision to prioritise events which take place over a longer period and drive footfall and spend in our town centres. This means more opportunities for people to join in, and greater benefits for businesses.

"This year we have a busy winter events programme, with the Royal National Mòd on from 13-21 October, and Paisley Halloween Festival, which takes place over three nights from 26 to 28 October, and has grown in recent years to become one of the biggest and best events of its kind in the UK.

"That will be followed by a month-long Paisley's Christmas event, as well as Christmas lights switch-ons across Renfrewshire."
