Councillors have green-lit a new housing development in Kilsyth.

P. McKernan Construction applied to North Lanarkshire Council seeking planning approval to build 23 houses and 15 flats on a site adjacent to Acre House in Stirling Road.

Planning officers recommended granting permission as it was deemed to be in keeping with the local development plan and that the character and amenity of the area could be maintained.

The permission comes with a list of 21 conditions and a legal agreement ensuring compliance with the affordable housing policy will also have to be drawn up before the official notice is issued.

The site is a former industrial yard of 1.27 hectares in area, located south of woodland which is part of the Colzium Estate.

The original plans did not include play facilities at first, but following further discussion with the applicant these will be included, with the type of equipment to be installed covered in the conditions.

Ten of the total 42 homes, or a financial equivalent, will be given to the council to support its new housing supply programme.

The council received a total of 12 objections with regard to the application, including one from MP Stuart McDonald, but in their report to councillors planning officers said these complaints either were not significant or were addressed in the list of conditions.

The planning committee unanimously approved the application, subject to the recommended conditions.
