GLASGOW has been named as one of the most influential cities in British music.

Research by online casino 888 also revealed that legendary Maryhill singer Donovan is the city’s most influential artist, based on the number of times his songs have been sampled, covered and remixed.

The distinctive 60s star, who blended folk, jazz, pop and psychedelic rock topped a Glasgow list which also included Simple Minds, Primal Scream and CHVRCHES.

Glasgow is the only Scottish city to make it into the top ten (at number eight) with 548 songs by city artists having influenced other commercially released songs.

London came top, with 21,330 and Liverpool, with 13, 464 was in second place.

Researchers analysed discographies of thousands of artists for the study, which found The Beatles are the most covered and sampled UK band of all time.

The Liverpool quartet’s most influential songs, according to the rankings, are Yesterday, Something and I Saw Her Standing There.

The research also discovered that Depeche Mode is the most remixed British band and Drake is the most influential artist in modern music.

The UK’s most popular charted artists are most likely to sample Lyn Collins, while David Guetta has inspired the most remixes by modern artists.
