NURSERY children in North Glasgow are tired of litterbugs and are taking matters into their own hands.

Pupils at the Ardoch Childcare Centre, Possilpark, went on an “eco-walk” around their local area and found heaps of rubbish around the nursery.

They decided to take matters into their own hands and bosses ordered litter picking kits from the council so they could get to work.

Kitted out with hi-vis vests and tools, the children stuffed bin bags full of waste strewn across the streets near the Bardowie Street centre.

After a successful cleaning session, it has been decided that the project will now become permanent.

Childcare manager at the nursery Angela Rushton-Clark said: “The children at Ardoch Childcare Centre are very enthusiastic about keeping their nursery and the local area clear of litter and other rubbish.

“They will inherit this planet, so to see them so eager to do something positive for change is inspiring. If more people could take their lead and just put their litter in a bin, then it would reduce the amount of waste on the streets and they would know that they have made a difference. I am very proud of our eco-warriors.”

A spokesman for the council said: “We are very pleased to support the children and staff at Ardoch Children’s Centre and their efforts to improve their local environment.

“Unfortunately too many people do drop litter without any regard for the impact it has on the environment and the people who live within affected communities.

“But getting involved in community litter picks helps to empower groups and individuals and helps to build civic pride and resilience within neighbourhoods.

“The efforts of everyone at Ardoch Children’s Centre is part of a wider campaign that shows that People Make Glasgow Greener.

“Any other groups that wish to participate can get involved by contacting out neighbourhood improvement service through the council website www.Glasgow.gov.uk “
