A TIMES Past reader from the US is on a mission to find out more about a sci-fi convention held in Glasgow 40 years ago.
Tommy Esson is trying to track down photos and more information on Hitchercon, which he believes was staged at the Ingram Hotel on the weekend of September 26 to 28 in 1980. He told us: “It was held shortly after the first “Albacon” and was labelled variously as Hitchercon, Hitchercon1, or Hitchercon One. It is considered to have been the first ever convention themed around The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, as its author Douglas Adams was the guest of honour.”
Tommy adds: “I have found very little written description of the event aside from basic acknowledgement that it took place, and a group of attendees who I’ve contacted recently unfortunately have rather fuzzy memories after 40 years.”
A search of our archives has so far revealed nothing – can anyone assist Tommy? Get in touch with Times Past if you can – ann.fotheringham@glasgowtimes.co.uk or write to us at Glasgow Times, 125 Fullarton Drive, Glasgow G32 8FG.
