THE man who played Boaby the Barman in Still Game has backed protesters stopping an immigration raid in Pollokshields. 

Gavin Mitchell praised demonstrators who have gathered to stop a Home Office van containing two detainees driving from the scene.

Tweeting a picture of the extraordinary scene, he said: "This why people make Glasgow."

As we reported earlier, it's understood two men are being held in the van in Kenmure Street, which is filled with people who have assembled in a bid to stop the raid.

Police Scotland said they were there assisting colleagues from the UK Border Agency.

It is not known if anyone was arrested after violent clashes between police and protesters, which saw police push demonstrators to the ground and some led away by officers. 

Glasgow Times:

The area's MP Alison Thewliss has asked the Home Office to call off the raid but, speaking to the Glasgow Times earlier this afternoon, she said she had not heard back from the UK Government department. 

The Home Office was approached for comment.
