Worried residents are hoping people power can force Scottish Water to pull the plug on plans to build a sewer and pump facility on much-loved greenspace.

A planning application has been submitted to East Renfrewshire Council to construct a kiosk, ventilation column, access lay-by and footpaths at the junction of Braidholm Road and Whitton Drive, in Giffnock.

More than 50 objections have been lodged and residents are determined to fight the plans, which may involve the removal of historic trees and impact an area used by walkers.

A spokesman for the Braidholm Grass group said: “We don’t believe Scottish Water have paid any concern to the planning policy for the area, which is a protected urban greenspace.

“They want to stick a big storm tank under the ground and on top of it put all of these access hatches and metal and concrete.”

Scottish Water has said the project will tackle internal and external waste-water flooding which affects properties and a nearby road.

The Braidholm Grass group met with representatives from the public body this week to discuss the plans but remain concerned.

“They are saying 10 months’ duration work during Covid lockdown, with large heavy machinery and the road’s closure and loss of greenspace for that time,” said the spokesperson.

However, Scottish Water described the meeting as “constructive” and said it takes any concerns very seriously.

A spokeswoman added: “We will work with the group to review our plans for a suitable and practical solution to help alleviate flooding for some home owners in the area.”

She also said boreholes previously installed for a period of monitoring during site investigation works which are now complete will be removed.

The proposals will be considered by councillors in due course.
