A MAN tried to hold up a pet shop - before saying he was sorry and leaving empty handed.

Ross Hopwood burst into Fur n' Feathers in Shawlands and told owner George Carmichael: "I want to rob you."

The 37 year-old demanded cash claiming he was "desperate".

But, prosecutor Claire Wallace told Glasgow Sheriff Court: "Mr Carmichael ushered Hopwood out the shop before he apologised and left.”

Hopwood was arrested the next day - his lawyer told the court he was "remorseful" for what happened.

Hopwood pleaded guilty to assault and attempted robbery. Sentencing was deferred.

Sheriff Ian Fleming said: “You have five previous convictions including one at the high court.

“This was an armed robbery of commercial premises. In my view custody is inevitable.”
