Rangers took one step closer to their 55th league title as they picked up all three points against Livingston in the Scottish Premiership last night.
Alfredo Morelos was the hero as he bundled home the winner in the 87th minute and Gers are now just four points away from being crowned Premiership champions.
Which Rangers stars deserve the plaudits for the win? Who may have done more for their side?
Here at Rangers Stock Market, our Glasgow Times Sport writers will take you through whose stock has risen and whose has dropped every week as the Gers close in on the title.
UP
Nathan Patterson
The youngster could have easily lost confidence after his covid breach, but after being welcomed back following his isolation period, Patterson has been tremendous. With James Tavernier picking up an injury Patterson has slotted seamlessly into the right back berth. It is hard to believe that yesterday’s win over Livingston was Patterson’s full Scottish Premiership debut, but he certainly has a big future ahead.
Last night the 19-year-old produced another solid display in defence, but he also looked a threat going forward too. He won three aerial duels, made four clearances and made three interceptions during the 90 minutes as Gers ran out 1-0 winners.
Connor Goldson
The former Brighton defender just seems to get better and better. Last night saw Goldson clock up 150 Rangers appearances and in doing so he became the fastest Gers players to reach that milestone. Goldson was accomplished at the back as his side clocked up yet another clean sheet when they faced off against Livingston yesterday. The 28-year-old made two interceptions, five clearances, one block, a key pass and also won nine aerial duals.
The above stats don’t come as a shock though because Goldson has been producing these kinds of numbers all season. He has been absolutely colossal and one of the key members of the squad who are so close to reaching a memorable title win.
Alfredo Morelos
The goal scoring hero once again. Morelos has matured as a player this season and has improved his link-up play massively. Rangers of course have other striking options in Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Jermain Defoe, but Morelos is the standout.
He could have quite easily taken the huff and given up following his penalty snub in the first half, but instead he remained determined to break the deadlock at the Tony Macaroni Stadium. His celebrations showed how much it meant. A top top talent.
DOWN
Steven Gerrard
Steven Gerrard was shown a red card last night for his protests following Morelos’ penalty snub. The striker was adjudged to have dived by referee John Beaton, but television replays clearly showed that Livingston goalkeeper Max Stryjek made contact with the Colombian. Morelos was booked and Gerrard was clearly unhappy with the decision at half-time.
Gerrard then let rip at the referee as he marched onto the field to confront him – with Beaton responding by flashing two yellow cards. Gerrard was picked up by TV microphones ranting: “You were f****** bang wrong. You’re bang out of order.”
Scott Arfield
The midfielder has popped up with some important goals, assists and performances for Rangers this season, but it was obvious last night that he was struggling with the pace of the game. Arfield has just returned from an ankle injury, which he picked up against Hibernian on Boxing Day.
It will of course take the former Falkirk man time to get back up to speed, but last night wasn’t his best performance in Light Blue. He will remain an important figure at Ibrox though and will definitely play his part in the last few games of the season as Gers close in on the historical 55.
