A YOUNG man was caught brandishing a wooden baton after his younger brother got “battered”.

Dean Bird, of Dalmarnock, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.

The 22-year-old previously pleaded guilty of being in possession of an offensive weapon on June 23 last year.

The court heard: “At around 7.20pm, police were on patrol in Parkhead. They observed a disturbance on Beattock Street.

“They observed a male brandishing something above his head. They approached the male - the accused.

“The officers asked him to stand still which he did, he was cooperative.

“He freely stated, ‘they battered my wee brother, I’m not having that’.

“The police seized a wooden baton from him, and he identified himself. He was cautioned and charged and there was no reply.”

Bird’s solicitor explained that his client had responded to another incident in which his younger brother was attacked by a number of individuals.

He added: “Some of these individuals were inside the property, he was outside the property.

“It was more an incidence of bravado than anything else.

“Mr Bird appears as a first offender and the social work report is very positive.”

Sheriff Valerie Mays told Bird: “This is a serious matter.

“However, I will defer sentence for six months and if you are of good behaviour, I will draw a line under this matter.”
