BANDS and comedians are joining forces in a last-ditch attempt to save a Govan “institution” from closure.

A fundraising gig has been organised to plug some of the holes in Sunny Govan Radio’s finances, which have been decimated by the coronavirus pandemic.

We told previously how local figures such as Pollok-born rapper and author Darren Mcgarvey had rallied around a campaign to save the beloved station.

Now he will join acts such as Colonel Mustard and the Dijon 5, Becci Wallace, Respek-Ba, Dopesickfly and others at an online gig to raise vital cash for Sunny Govan.

Steven Gilfoyle, the station manager, revealed in January the dire state of the station’s finances.

He said: “We’re at risk of losing a great community resource, not just a radio station but something that has done a lot for Govan, for Glasgow and to promote local culture and events.

“We’re really grateful that artists we have promoted on the station have come together to help save the station.”

They are facing a deficit of around £30,000 and Mr Gilfoyle blamed a 70 per cent downturn in the charity’s income for its financial woes.

The show will be broadcast live on the station’s Facebook page on Friday, March 5 at 5.30pm.
