AN OAP who crashed into a pedestrian days before having eye surgery has been fined.

Mohammed Manzur, 82, was initially unaware that he struck Michelle McConologue in Glasgow’s Gorbals last December.

The retiree drove on and only realised after members of the public banged on his car at a red light.

Miss McConologue suffered ligament damage to her foot as well as bruising to her knee and hip.

Police were later unable to speak to Mr Manzur about the incident as he was asleep recovering from his surgery.

The first offender pleaded guilty on Friday at Glasgow Sheriff Court to careless driving to Miss McConologue’s injury.

The court heard the victim was standing waiting to cross the road outside a Co-Op shop at 4.15pm

Prosecutor Pamela-Jane Connelly said: “The accused’s Nissan Qashkai approached the bend and the front of his vehicle hit Miss McConologue on the leg.

“This caused her to fall to the ground but he was unaware that he had struck her and continued to drive a short distance.”

Miss McConologue was taken to hospital.

Miss Connelly said: “She suffered ligament damage to her left foot, bruising to her left knee and hip.

“She also sustained a sore back all of which she is still undergoing physiotherapy for.

“She had a small cut to her forehead as well as a cracked tooth.”

Officers later attended at Manzur’s property but were met by his daughter.

Miss Connelly added: “She said he was unable to speak to them as he was recuperating from a cataract operation on his eyes and couldn’t wake him.”

Jeremy O’Neill, defending, told the court Manzur believed Miss McConologue was close to the edge of the footpath and he was driving slowly.

Mr O’Neill added: “He apologises and accepts his actions.”

Fining him £370, Sheriff Gerard Considine said: “I’m not going to disqualify you but the court does take a serious view when a person on the pavement is struck by a vehicle.”

Manzur, of the city’s Pollokshields, had eight penalty points put on his licence as well as the fine.
