A PRISONER who slashed a fellow inmate he claimed poisoned his food has been jailed for 28 months.

James Love, 46, turned on Kevin Ruddy in Glasgow’s Barlinnie prison on April 28 this year.

Ruddy, a food server, was scarred for life after the broken razor assault near the prison’s kitchen.

Paranoid Love had resorted to eating corn flakes as he believed Ruddy had tampered with his meals.

Love pleaded guilty on Thursday at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the assault to Ruddy’s severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

Prosecutor Emily MacReath said: “He approached Ruddy and slashed him to the ride side of his face.

“Officers recovered a prison issue disposable razor blade. Love was restrained by staff.”

Ruddy was left scarred for life after suffering an ear wound.

John McLaughlin, defending, told the court Love had reported the alleged poisoning to prison staff.

The lawyer said: “He was left only eating corn flakes as he was of the belief his food was being tampered with.

“He thought he was at risk and thought, if he acted this way, it would put an end to what was happening.

“There is no evidence Ruddy did any of this.”

The hearing was told Love already had a high court conviction for assault and robbery

Sheriff Brian Cameron said: “This was an unprovoked attack on a fellow prisoner which left him with a permanent scar.
