STEVEN GERRARD admits he could take a horses for courses approach to his goalkeeping situation this term as Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin battle it out for the Rangers gloves.

McGregor made his first appearance of the season in the win over Lincoln Red Imps after recovering from a couple of injury issues. In his absence, McLaughlin has kept a record-breaking seven consecutive clean sheets in the Premiership.

Gerrard could now look to alternate his options as attentions turn to the trip to face Hibernian before Rangers return to European action against Willem II next week.

He said: “I think that will be something I decide at the time, from game to game. What I will say is I've got two fantastic keepers who are pushing each other really hard. I can see that in training, it's competitive. They get on really well and have big respect for each other.

“I didn't envision it would go the way it's gone. With all due respect the plan was to start with Allan as the number one if he had a strong pre-season. I think he deserved that with his form over the last two years.

“Unfortunately he's had a couple of knee niggles which have set him back. Jon has certainly took his chance. He's performed well and playing with a calmness and showing his experience.

"He's keeping clean sheets and making saves, so it's very difficult to change the keeper in that situation. If it had worked out as originally planned, I would have played Jon [on Thursday ]night to give him a game because you don't want your keepers going to long without one.

“Unfortunately we're not in a position where we can play games behind closed doors because of the testing and stuff so I do have to think about keeping them both as fresh as I can and also sharp with the right amount of minutes."
