STEVEN Gerrard could turn to Preston North End star Daniel Johnson to bolster his Rangers midfield this summer.

Gerrard has significantly strengthened his Ibrox squad in recent weeks as the likes of Jon McLaughlin, Ianis Hagi and Kemar Roofe have made the move to Ibrox for a historic Premiership campaign.

Rangers remain in the market for further reinforcements, however, and Johnson is on the extensive list of potential options to add to Gerrard’s central ranks this term.

The 27-year-old is out of contract at the end of the campaign and reports that a £2million bid has already been put on the table by Rangers have been played down south of the border.

Deepdale boss Alex Neil would be hugely reluctant to lose Johnson – who scored 12 goals in 34 appearances last term – as he looks to guide North End into Championship promotion contention once again.

Johnston – alongside Ben Pearson, Ben Davies and Alan Browne – is one of the key players in Neil’s squad and has risen to prominence since moving from Aston Villa for just £50,000 five years ago.

Much of the transfer discussion surrounding Rangers in recent weeks has been on players potentially leaving Ibrox and while doubt still remains over the long-term future of Alfredo Morelos amid interest from several clubs, winger Ryan Kent will remain part of Gerrard’s squad after Leeds United saw a £10million bid rejected last month.
