More than £3000 has been raised for the funeral of a Motherwell teenager after his tragic death.

Mark Ross, 17, died after being found injured in a car park near the town's Civic Centre on Sunday.

Tributes poured in for the "angel boy" who had only recently finished S6.

His school Our Lady High School in Motherwell wrote: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mark Ross who passed away yesterday.

"He was a wonderful young man and he will be sadly missed by so many."

Now a fundraiser has been started to help his family pay for the funeral with any additional funds going towards the Prostate Cancer Trust.

Organiser Sophie Lloyd described Mark as  "loving, kind and thoughtful"  and a "special boy".

She wrote: "Mark Ross was a special boy and has been tragically taken too soon. He’s left behind his Mum, Dad, Brother and Sister, as well as so many others.

"He was a loving, kind and thoughtful young man with such a bright future and such a happy life ahead of him, that he was so eager to start.

"No words can describe the loss and suffering being felt by those who loved Mark the most."

Thousands were raised in just three hours after the fundraiser was launched.

Sophie added: "He was an angel boy, and now he’s with the angels."

She explained that the donations to the Prostate Cancer Trust would have been a cause near to his heart after his lost his grandfather to the disease.

One shattering tribute to Mark posted to Facebook read: "I just want you to wake up and tell us this is all a bad dream.

"I'm so thankful to have had you in my life when I did and the memories you gave me I will cherish forever and ever.

"You were so so special words can’t even describe, and so loved by everyone around you.

"I hope we all do you proud Mark. You will always hold a very special place in my heart and you will most certainly never be forgotten.

"I love you always. Sleep tight handsome."

The fundraiser comes as a 17-year-old was arrested and charged in connection with drugs offences.

A police spokeswoman said: "A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course to establish the exact circumstances of the death.

"A 17-year-old male has been arrested and charged in connection with drugs offences.

"He has been released on an undertaking and is due to appear at a later date."
