NINE city council cleansing depots have donated at least three food bins each to foodbanks and charities helping vulnerable people across Glasgow.

The food bins were set up at each base in May encouraging staff to donate to who might be struggling to make ends meet during the crisis.

Workers wanted to play their part and make sure no-one went hungry.

Chris Mitchell, convener of the GMB union, said: “This is a phenomenal gesture from all nine cleansing depots across the city to give back to local charities.

“We have collected food in a wheelie bin over the last few weeks as we want to say thank you to the people in our communities who help others in need.

“The public have been good to us throughout this pandemic and we realise that a lot of people are struggling at this time.

“I want to thank the Glasgow Lord Provost for doing an absolutely exceptional job over the last eight weeks, helping out places like the Salvation Army, taking PPE to care homes and contributing to the cleansing staff to see what kind of tasks we do on a daily basis.”

Lord Provost Phillip Braat passed on his thanks to the cleansing department and frontline staff who have risked their lives over the past few months.

Mr Braat said: “The last several months have been very tough and hard on everyone but I think it is a credit to all of you for what you have done for not only what you do every single day throughout the year in all weather conditions, in the hail and the rain.

“The last few months have been very difficult and I want to say a massive thank you on behalf of the city for what you have done and for the very kind generosity for collecting food which will go to very deserving causes.

“There are some unfortunate vulnerable people in our city and this food delivery will make a huge impact in their lives.

“It is also a thank you to all the people of Glasgow for what they have had to ensure over the last several months and to all the frontline staff and particularly the cleansing department for everything you do and for this very generous donation.”
