A GROUP of drunken yobs battered two people with baseball bats after getting drunk at a house party, despite the coronavirus lockdown.

Cops are on the hunt for at least five suspects after a man, 33, and woman, 42, were rushed to hospital when they beaten up in William Street in Johnstone, Renfrewshire at around 8.40pm on Saturday.

Police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened but believe the gang had been drinking together in a home before leaving and wandering the street with weapons.

They say the yobs started going house to house with metal poles and baseball bats and acting threateningly to locals. It is then understood the victims were set about in the middle of the street by the thugs.

The gang is believed to have run off when a passerby was heard shouting for help in the street.

The man was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley, where he received stitches to his head, whereas the woman suffered only minor injuries.

Both have since been released from hospital.

Detectives are currently scouring CCTV footage from the street and going door-to-door in a bid to find the thugs.

Detective Inspector Ian Ross, based in Paisley, told our sister title The Gazette: "This was shocking incident and appears to have only occurred when people were having house parties and drinking together.

"We want to remind people again that they have not to do this and to please follow the guidelines on social distancing being given out by Police Scotland and the Scottish Government.

"This is a busy street in the centre of Johnstone and we would ask anyone who saw anything to contact us on 101."
