A COST of £19 million for a footbridge (Development of Sighthill bridge to cost £19m)? Have the councillors lost their minds? It looks horrendous and will be vandalised immediately. Surely with all the pressing issues in the city there are other areas where this large sum of money would be much better spent.

HOW does this cost £19 million?

Are there any civil engineers out there who can cost this without taking the hit and miss?

IT’S not just a plain bridge, though. They want a park and tree-lining. It’s actually quite big.

With regards to homelessness, the bridge shall be the link between the city centre and a new housing complex, which includes social and mid-market housing. All the money to pay for the bridge and also the housing complex is coming from the city deal.

Don’t get me wrong, I have to agree with everyone – it’s a bit over the top for a bridge.

IF we didn’t need hotels, they wouldn’t build them – it’s simple supply-and-demand economics (Green light for Trongate demolition to make way for major development). Have you heard of B&Q? They are everywhere, but I prefer Bill’s at the Barras.

THE US spends $13 million a year detaining each of the 40 people locked up at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp – the vast majority of whom have never been charged with a crime.

It is remarkable how much injustice can cost. The US should never have opened Guantanamo – and continuing to dump money on it is a misuse of tax-payer funding. $13m is an astonishing amount of public money to lock one person up. Especially when it’s someone like Abdul Latif Nasir, who has been cleared for release in a process involving six separate US agencies.

Last year, the US spent $13m on each of the 40 men held in Guantanamo – totalling more than half a billion dollars. That amount is astonishing when you consider that they “only” spent $78,000 to lock someone up in their “supermax” prison facility in Colorado. That’s as much as 166 times more public money on people who have never been convicted of a crime. Guantanamo Bay is a symbol of injustice for America and its allies – and it’s an expensive one.
