SCHOOL pupils across Glasgow who have gone above and beyond to help those in need could win a special prize ahead of Christmas.

Aspire Academy Glasgow in Hillington, which launched this summer to ensure school uniform is affordable for everyone, is running its first Big Christmas Giveaway over the next two weeks.

They have started an online competition through Facebook in a bid to give back to the local community.

Organisers have issued a post on their Facebook page encouraging schools and parents to nominate their class or child and tell them about an achievement, act of kindness or efforts at school in return for a unique prize.

Gail McCarthy, business development manager, said: “We are encouraging people to nominate their schools, class or an individual who has shown a great act of kindness or bravery.

“So far we have more than 70 shares on our Facebook page and have already received more than £300 worth of vouchers for Smyths Toys and passes for Flip Out.

“We want to give back to the community as we understand how hard it can be for parents at this time of year to buy presents.

“We have heard some great stories so far.

“One boy who went trick or treating on Halloween donated all his sweets to his local foodbank and a girl at nursery has befriended a deaf girl in her class. She cuddles the deaf girl when it is time to nap so she doesn’t feel alone.”

Sunnyside Primary School in Easterhouse has also been nominated for a prize for its work to help reduce ocean plastic.

They launched a campaign Nae Straw At Aw this year to prevent plastic pollution from entering the ocean.

The pupils try to engage our pupils and the Sunnyside family in nature by getting them to join in with activities aimed at protecting the natural environment

They have also initiated their own campaigns designed and led by their young people with the support and guidance from many wonderful conservation organisations in Scotland.

Aspire Academy has also teamed up with local businesses who have generously donated vouchers and gifts and experience visits around the city.

Gail continued: “We will be delivering the prizes next week to the winners. Elsie the Aspire Elf will be surprising the 12 special children with presents during the 12 days of Christmas.

“Elsie is also on a tour of visiting select schools and leaving behind small gifts so the children can follow her trails.

“We are looking forward to putting a smile on the children’s faces.”

There are still a few days left to nominate a child, their class or school via the Aspire Academy Facebook page. Prizes will be awarded at the beginning of December.
