University bosses say they are increasing security patrols on campus after police confirmed they are probing a series of sexual assaults in the West End of Glasgow.

Officers have launched an investigation into reports a 20-year-old woman was raped in Sutherland Lane, near the University of Glasgow library, in the early hours of Thursday, October 31.

However, detectives have also confirmed a man has been arrested and charged over two sexual assaults in the Partick and North Woodside areas on October 17 and a separate attack in Hillhead on October 24.

University chiefs say they are now taking extra security measures including improving on-campus lighting, but have warned students to be vigilant when leaving the building late at night.

A spokeswoman for the institution said: “There have recently been four alleged cases of sexual assault in the West End of Glasgow  – Police Scotland have charged a man in connection with three of these assaults.”

“Incidents like this are rare - student and staff safety is of the utmost importance to the University. 

“We work extremely closely with Police Scotland and we have increased security patrols and improved lighting on campus.”

Officers say the 34-year-old was charged in connection with the assaults in Lawrence Street, Napiershall Street and Cranworth Street.

A report has been sent to the procurator fiscal, but police say enquiries are ongoing to establish any connection with the reported rape.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that enquiries are ongoing following a report of the serious sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman in Sutherland Lane, near University Place, Hillhead, in the early hours of Thursday 31 October 2019.”

“Police are following a number of lines of enquiry and anyone with any information is asked to contact police via 101."

"A 34-year-old man was arrested, charged and was subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal following a report of three sexual assaults in the West End of Glasgow on 17 October 2019 (on this date there was one in Lawrence Street, Partick and one in Napiershall Street, North Woodside) and 24 October (Cranworth Street, Hillhead).

“He is due to appear at court at a later date."
