A LEWIS Hamilton wannabe caught speeding at 111mph on a 70mph speed limit has had his private hire car licence renewed.

Sulman Khan, who has been compared to the Formula 1 racing driver, was caught by police in May 2018 on his way to Manchester.

In January this year Khan was fined £540 and had four penalty points put on his licence as a result. He was brought before the licensing committee on Thursday.

Mr Khan senior, the client’s father, spoke on his behalf.

Khan’s dad said: “He was actually only driving at 104mph. He had to go down to Manchester to see his girlfriend who had just lost a baby.

“My son has been an Uber driver for three years and has never been in trouble with the law before. He had just found out what had happened to his girlfriend and was in a rush to see her.”

Members of the committee were unimpressed with the response.

Councillor Alex Wilson said: “Your son could have been injured or could have killed someone because of his actions.

“No-one has the excuse to drive at that speed.”

Mr Khan senior responded: “This was a one off. My son has been driving since he was 17-year-old. He only drove like this because of the circumstances.

“We all do that. My wife had a stroke and I had to drive her to hospital at 75mph because there were no ambulances available to take her.”

The man was then told by councillors not to lecture them on “the circumstances” surrounding this event.

Councillor Gary Gray said: “It concerns me that you can stand there and justify your son driving at 104mph on a 70mph speed limit.

“We have all been in tricky circumstances, but we don’t drive like Lewis Hamilton. I am a man of the world and I don’t buy this excuse. There are rules which have to be abided by.”

Following the discussion members agreed to renew Mr Khan junior’s licence for one year and issued him a severe warning.
