Fans of former Rangers legend Fernando Ricksen will have a chance to say goodbye as details of his funeral have emerged.

The star passed away aged 42 this week after he lost his six-year battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday at Wellington Church in the Hillhead area of Glasgow, followed by a private family service.

Rangers Football Club posted a statement regarding the funeral on Saturday morning.

It read: "Rangers can today confirm that Fernando Ricksen’s funeral will be next Wednesday, 25th September.

"Rangers and the Rangers Former Players Benevolent Club will release further details in due course on behalf of the friends and family of Fernando."

And the funeral procession is expected to pass Ibrox Stadium, as revealed by close friend Stan Gordon.

"I was at a meeting with Rangers yesterday about the plans," he told the Scottish Sun. "The plan is for the hearse to go past Ibrox, which I think is very touching.

"There will be thousands of people wanting to pay their respects so it makes sense.

"I've been speaking to a lot of ex-players who will be at the funeral - Marco Negri, Jorg Albertz, Arthur Numan and Nacho Novo.

"Other ex-teammates are desperate to be there to pay their respects and it’s all about booking flights to make sure they are there. It will be an emotional day."

Rangers bosses agreed to cover the cost of the funeral this week.
