A FAMILY stricken by tragedy have opened up about the 'disgusting' temporary accommodation they have faced in their fight for a new home.

Paul Nelson and his family cannot return to their GHA flat because of an ongoing legal battle, and presented as homeless to Glasgow City Council last week.

Along with his civil partner Paul, 37, and two young grandchildren Mr Nelson was allocated one room at the St Enoch Hotel in Howard Street.

Glasgow Times:

However, the family say they were forced to stay with family as a result of the 'filthy' conditions of the room, which they say was uninhabitable.

Photographs taken by Mr Nelson's partner show black mould growing in the shower, around the base of the sink, and under the floorboards.

Holes in the roof and stains on the room's carpets are also visible in the pictures.

Despite being offered one night of accommodation on Thursday evening, the 57-year-old grandfather has said enough is enough, and demanded the council give them some stability for them and the children.

Mr Nelson said: "When were arrived, the smell was horrendous. From the front door, dampness hits you.

Glasgow Times:

"There were two sets of bunk beds in the room, so if there was an emergency we couldn't have got out the room - we all got emotional, the boys got upset.

"Black mould on the floor, dampness, it was like a squat. The kids kept their clothes on, we didn't to be there.

"We've been at Mansion Street every day and all they offer us is the St Enoch Hotel.

The family's fight to put a roof over their heads is just the latest tragedy to hit the children.

In 2012, Paul's son Mark died of a heart attack, leaving behind two young children.

Now caring for children, the family are forced to travel to and from Knightswood for schooling, Possilpark and the city centre for prospective accommodation.

Now aged eight and 10, the boys are under the care of the civil partners, who say their current housing predicament is worsening the trauma already felt by the pair.

Paul added: "The boys need structure, we can't be jumping in and out of different hotels. There's no houses available.

"This isn't a life for us. The system doesn't help you, it makes your situation worse.

"We've been told nothing new, just do the journey every day, hope we get there before anyone else to be allocated. Otherwise we'll have to sleep in the car.

Glasgow Times:

"We're adults, we could sleep on the streets, but we shouldn't have to.

"The situation we find ourselves in, we're being made to suffer. You get treated worse than a dog."

The council have now confirmed the hotel's conditions have been raised with the owner.

A spokeswoman added: “Our understanding is that Mr Nelson has a housing association tenancy which he is unable to use at present.

“We have offered him alternative interim accommodation in a guest house and his complaint about the condition of the room at the St Enoch’s hotel has been raised with the owners.

"Efforts to find them a temporary furnished flat while they await relocation to another housing association property are ongoing.”

A GHA spokesperson said: “We’ve given the tenants a priority for re-housing based on their circumstances and we can continue to offer advice on their housing options.”

The St Enoch Hotel declined to comment on the claims.
