THERE was a heavy police presence at a Glasgow rally commemorating Irish hunger strikes on Friday night.
Photographs of the event at Barrowland Park showed dozens of police at the scene.
There were claims online that police had surrounded and isolated a group of revellers - a practice known as kettling - but a spokesman for Police Scotland said the event had passed "with no issues whatsoever".
The Evening Times previously reported that East End residents were anxious about the rally commemorating the 1981 hunger strikers.
Calton councillor Robert Connelly said he had been flooded with emails from locals concerned for their safety.
Councillor Connelly said: “I am concerned about public safety as tensions in the area have been rising since this event was announced."
The event was hosted by Cairde na hÉireann, an organisation founded in 2004 whose goal is to achieve a united Ireland.
