A SILENT vigil is set to be held in Glasgow on Friday after the death of a cyclist in the city's South Side.

Campaign group GoBike have organised what they are calling a 'silent protest' for safer cycling in the city.

On Wednesday, a woman died on Pollokshaws Road after being struck by a lorry just after rush hour.

She was cycling past the junction with Nithsdale Road and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Politicians from the area spoke out about road safety on Glasgow's roads for cyclists, calling for improvements to be made and additional cycle lanes put in place.

Now, GoBike have added their voices to these calls, organising an event at the site of the crash on Friday evening.

A statement on the group's website reads: "We are devastated to have heard that we lost someone cycling on our roads today. We send our condolences to this woman’s friends and family, and strength to the wider cycling community who we know are feeling the shock.

"We would like to stand with her in solidarity and join with others in a brief and respectful silent protest for safer cycling.

"We will gather at 5.30pm on the pavement at the corner of Pollokshaws Road and Nithsdale Drive this Friday where we will hold a two minute silence signalled by a bell, and then disperse."
