CONCERNS over noise levels and crowd control at two West End Festival events have been voiced by a local council.

Licensing chiefs at Glasgow City Council handed organisers G1 Group a temporary public entertainment licence for two street parties, despite concerns put forward by Hillhead Community Council.

The events, which will include live music, face painting, balloon sculptors, children’s crafts and catering units, will take place on Sunday, June 2 on Ashton Lane and Vinicombe Street.

Both parties will run from 12pm to 8pm.

“We’re not objecting in principle but we do have some concerns about noise and crowd control,” a Community Council representative said.

She told councillors how nearby residents had been “seriously affected by amplifications”, with parents also raising “serious concerns” over the impact on small children’s hearing.

“You can hear it from a long way away.”

The representative added: “We have much more concern about Vinicombe Street than we do Ashton Lane.”

She said the council worried the crowd would be too large for the street and that pedestrians had been blocked from getting down the road last year.

The Ashton Lane party has a proposed capacity of 3,000 people, with a capacity of 1,129 at the Vinicombe Street event.

The Community Council also asked for the police to be in attendance and effective crowd control measures put in place.

It requested the clean-up begins immediately after the event finishes and that people did not linger in the area.

Archie MacIver, representing G1 Group, said the parties were a “family friendly” operation, which have been running for many years.

He said it would involve acoustic instruments, which are amplified, but there would be “no heavy bass or anything like that”.

A stewarding company will be employed to deal with crowd issues, he said, adding that no complaints had been received after previous events.

Mr MacIver also said there would be an initial clean-up by the company before City Council staff arrived. “I understand that is usually done on the same evening,” he said.
