A POPULAR sky bar has been given permission to extend its opening hours by licensing chiefs.

Glasgow City Council's Licensing Board has ruled the Radisson RED hotel, on Finnieston Quay, can stay open for an extra hour.

It will now be able to close at 1am.

Archie MacIver, representing the Tunnel Street hotel, told councillors the bar has received "enormous acclaim" since it opened and is in line for a number of awards.

Bars usually have to close at midnight under the city's licensing policy but Mr MacIver argued: "This application is fairly unique."

The ninth floor bar overlooks Glasgow, with views including the SSE Hydro and the SEC Armadillo.

The hotel's representative said the bar, which is "exceptionally busy", is "a level above" what other premises offer.

He added that there is "great demand for this offer" and said the bar had shown it was capable by previously opening until 2am for functions.

Guests will only be able to pay for alcohol directly before midnight, afterwards any orders will be charged to a room. Mr MacIver said there was a good supply of taxis nearby to cater for visitors leaving the bar.
