A COUPLE who were found dead in an Eastwood flat have been named locally as Nicole McGeachin and Derek Hurles.

The pair, who are both believed to be 23-years-old, were discovered by police at a property on Stoneside Square, near Thornliebank, just after 10am on Monday.

Nicole, a former pupil at Shawlands Academy, and Derek, who worked for building firm CCG, are thought to have been together for more than three years.

Tributes have now been posted to Derek on social media.

School friend Paige Tweedie posted: "Can't believe this. We all went to school with Derek and he was such a lovely boy, tragic."

The deaths are currently being treated as unexplained.

Reports suggest the couple had not been seen for three days at the flat.

A family friend told the Daily Record: "I have stayed here for a while and I knew them pretty well. They were lovely, warm and down to earth. I would see them out with their dogs. They had two dogs and they have been left with a pal.

“It’s tragic and hard to get your head around it. One minute they are here cutting about with their whole lives ahead of them and then the next thing they are both dead. It just shows you that you can’t take life for granted.

“There was local talk that it was something to do with gas but no one from the police or emergency services has told us anything.”

A neighbour added: “It is awful to think that some folk so young have died. I noticed the police and fire engines there at about noon but they might have been there before that.

“They need to get to the bottom of what happened.”
