A VIDEO showing dozens of rats scurrying around a retail park which includes food outlets has been shared with Glasgow City Council’s environmental health team.

A member of the public captured shocking footage of the rodents converging around waste food next to a recycling point used by the West End Retail Park on Crow Road.

The centre includes a Marks & Spencer Simply Food, Sainsbury’s, Boots, Superdrug and Home Bargains and is close to a McDonald’s restaurant and Partick’s Dumbarton Road.

Raymond Beatty, from Hyndland, captured the footage and said he had complained to the council’s environmental health team.

A spokeswoman from Standard Life Investments, which owns the centre, said: “This is a council recycling point and we’ve been working with them to try and resolve the litter problem, including paying for teams to clean around the recycling bins and carry out pest control.

“As these measures don’t seem to have worked, we’ve asked the council to remove the bins straight away. Keeping the shopping park clean and safe remains our top priority.”

A spokeswoman for the city council said: “This is a matter for the businesses within the retail park to arrange a private contractor to deal with any rat infestation.

“Our public health officers can advise on the best way forward however this is the responsibility of the businesses within the retail park to manage.”

A council spokeswoman said: "Glasgow City Council provides a number of pest control services, including a free service for the investigation and treatment of infestations within residential properties – not a commercial property or business.
