CANDLES, red roses and heart shaped balloons... the scene is set for a classic Valentine's Day dinner.

But instead of oysters and Champagne on the menu it's a Steak Bake with mini doughnuts.

Greggs - not normally known as a purveyor of romance - pulled a publicity blinder this year with its three-course sit down Valentine's meal.

Only available in five branches around the UK, the Argyle Street branch sold out of spots at its dinner in under 20 minutes.

But who brings their date to Greggs on one of the most high-stakes relationship evenings of the year?

Vanessa Murphy, from Uddingston, and her boyfriend of two years Chris McQueer, from Springboig, were among the eight couples cosied up for dinner.

Vanessa saw the evening mentioned on Twitter. The 23-year-old said: "I thought it was a joke. But when I realised it wasn't I knew I wanted to book."

Chris, 26, had no hesitations either. He said: "I was buzzing, I thought it would be great.

"It's definitely one of the more romantic things we've done as a couple."

Under soft lighting with professional waitresses bringing the dishes, couples settled down to a starter of canapes.

These included a pork and puff pastry slider, steak and blue cheese en croute, katsu tortilla wrap, béchamel toasted honey cured ham square and tomato gazpacho.

If that sounds fancier than expected, the main course brought things back to earth with a Greggs puff pastry parcel of choice with potato slices and salad.

As well as a class of Prosecco, guests enjoyed a brochette of mini doughnuts before petits fours and coffee.

Caitlin McLeese, of Johnstone, and Amy McGregor, of Rutherglen, were delighted with the dishes.

Caitlin said: "We have just started uni and we've bonded really quickly because of our shared love of Greggs."

The technical education students at Glasgow University had left their boyfriends at home to come out for a girls' evening.

The 22-year-old added: "We've ditched our boyfriends for the night."

The women were determined not to miss out. Amy said: "I followed Greggs on Twitter so I knew as soon as the tickets went on sale - I was in there straight away.

"I was worried it wouldn't be very nice but it's better than anything I expected."

So what's their usual?

Amy doesn't hesitate: "I'm a Steak Bake."

Caitlin is a bit more relazed. She said: "I like to mix it up. But I do like a chicken and bacon baguette."
