The Scottish Research Reactor Centre in East Kilbride was opened by Sir John Cockcroft, OM, Master of Churchill College, Cambridge on 13 November 1963.

The Centre was shared for training and research by the four Scottish Universities at the time - St. Andrews, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen - the Yoyal College of Science and Technology, Glasgow and Queen's University Belfast.

Costs of running expenses were met by DSIR until 31 July 1967. Design and construction of the facility were supervised by The Ministry of Public Building and Works.
