A prospective student has hit out at Glasgow Clyde College after he was interviewed for a place - despite the course being full.

Michael Christie applied for a place on an NC Sound Production offered by the college in the spring and was invited for an interview with several other students on June 13.

Less than a week later on June 19, Michael was told he had been put on the waiting list for the course.

He said: “I submitted my application during the application period so I had the impression that there were spaces available at the time.

“It seems as though they fill up all their places but still invite people for interviews and then chuck them on a waiting list which doesn’t seem fair.

“Myself and other students have been left in limbo without being able to plan ahead.

“We were invited to an interview for a course that’s already been filled up.

“It really impacts on students that are trying to better themselves and get into education.”

Michael filed a formal complaint with Glasgow Clyde College following the incident.

Glasgow Times:

In an email seen by the Glasgow Times, a representative from the college said it was their policy to interview all potential students applying for the course and due to the course being popular there was a waiting list.

In response to the complaint, the representative apologised that Michael 'never knew he was applying for a waiting list place'.

They added: "I will endeavour to work with our Admissions department to ensure this is made clear when the interview invite is sent."

Michael, 41, has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of Autism, which makes proper communication and forward planning paramount to his mental well-being.

He told the Glasgow Times: "I put this on my application and they made no accommodation for my disability.

Glasgow Times:

"I need to know in advance what's happening so I can plan ahead. I feel like my life has been put on hold.

“Now, clearly the course has started. I and other applicants were thrown on a waiting list without even being considered for a place because the places were already taken up.

"It’s not a fair way to treat people or a fair process. They’re giving people false hope.”

“I feel very frustrated and let down.”

A spokesperson for Glasgow Clyde College said: “The college offers waiting lists to popular courses, in line with other further education institutions across the UK.

"We’d like to extend our apologies for any inconvenience caused to this student.”
