Glasgow's Subway is set to close this Sunday (November 6) as it is to undergo modernisation.
The subway will close to allow contractor teams to install cabling and equipment inside the tunnels.
For many, the Subway is the easiest mode of travel across the city. Ahead of Sunday’s closure, here’s everything you need to know from replacement services to future closures.
How long will Glasgow’s subway be closed?
Glasgow’s subway will be closed all day on Sunday, November 6. There will be no services on both the inner and outer lines.
It will also close again on Sunday, November 13. All services will be cancelled on this day also.
The Director of the Subway Antony Smith has said that closures have been considered in relation to football games at Ibrox stadium.
He said: “This can obviously be impacted if we have football on a Sunday, and so we have tried to avoid that with no planned closures if there is football scheduled at Ibrox. “
Is there a replacement bus service for the Glasgow subway closure?
A replacement bus service will be running in lieu of subway services.
SPT states: “A shuttle bus service will be available, free of charge for intending Subway passengers, between Partick and Govan only. The bus service will run during Subway operating hours from stance 1 at Govan and stance 2 at Partick. Staff will be on hand to assist.”
Will there be Scotrail strikes on Sunday?
In recent months Scotrail services have been severely disrupted due to ongoing strikes so if you are looking to get trains on Sunday, be sure to head to the Scotrail website first.
While there are no strikes planned on Sunday, November 6, there are on the Friday prior and Tuesday after, so Scotrail has warned that services in-between will likely be disrupted.
Scotrail has stated: “On the evening before (Friday, 4 November), the days in between (Sunday, 6 November and Tuesday, 8 November), and the morning after (Thursday, 10 November) the strike action, there will be disruption caused by the closing and reopening of signal boxes at different times across the country.”
Why is the Glasgow subway closed?
The subway will close to allow contractor teams to install cabling and equipment within the tunnels for the new signalling and communications systems.
The closure will also give the project's contractor, Subway Joint Venture (JV), the opportunity to progress with plans to install screen doors on the platforms.
