SCOTS are heading to Blackpool to lap up the last of the heatwave.

As rain returns to Glasgow, the city's residents are heading to the Lancashire coast to enjoy the fine weather, while the weak pound and enhanced visitor attractions are also reported to be driving Scots south of the border.

Last week saw more visitors head to Blackpool than any other resort in the UK, according to the city's tourism chiefs.

A spokesman for Visit Blackpool said: "Around 35 per cent of visitors to Blackpool are Scottish but we are seeing the highest number of people visiting the resort this summer since the famous heatwaves of the 1970s.

"With rising inflation and the weak pound, more people are opting to stay in the UK rather than holiday abroad.”

Tourism is worth £1.44b to Blackpool’s economy, with more than 18 million people visiting each year.

Scots sun-seekers are flocking to the resort for its star outdoor attractions, including; Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blackpool Zoo and the charming Blackpool Model Village and Garden, along with the miles of golden sands; including the North West’s only Blue Flag beach – all backed by the famous Promenade.

A school of dolphins has also been spotted playing in the water off the Fylde Coast.

Kate Shane, Head of Merlin Entertainments Blackpool, said: “Whether Scots holidaymakers want to soak up the sun or stay out of the heat, we can tick every box here. The only thing you can’t do in Blackpool is ski.

The current heatwave is expected to last well into next week.
