GLASGOW City Council has been accused of treating the dead with ‘contempt’ through their neglect of a local cemetery.

Bereaved families have been left further anguished by fly tipping just yards away from where their loved ones are buried in Lambhill.

The issues have been reported to the local authority several times, as far back as January, but as of yet no action has been taken.

As well as dozens of tyres, an office printer, couch, car bumper and car battery have all been discarded in the cemetery.

Council bosses said they would be installing bollards at the entrance of the site to make it more difficult for dumpers to get in but nearly four months later, no changes have been made to secure the site outwith opening times and more waste is being added to the already bulging pile.

As previously reported by the Evening Times, the cemetery has been plagued by craters and potholes with yobs on motorbikes riding brazenly over graves.

The father of a man buried in the cemetery, who did not want to be named, described those who fly-tip in the site as ‘the lowest of the low’.

He added: “They are lowlife scumbags, the lowest of the low and must be punished.

“They should be punished in a way that hurts them both in the pocket and jail them.

“They have treated our dead with disrespect and we should treat the scum with the same.

“The cemetery is an absolute disgrace. The grass has only just been cut, there is flooding, drains are blocked because they haven’t been cleared in years.

“This is how Glasgow City Council treats our dead - with utter contempt. They have put up fees for plots and burials but Glasgow cemeteries are in such a disgraceful state.

“Over the past few years I have reported the motorbike riders for driving over the graves, cars racing around the cemetery, driving over graves, using the cemetery as a racing track and I will continue to do so but the council and police need to do their bit too.

“They should get off their backsides and sort these problems out. The police need to send in patrols once in a while. The council needs to lock the gates at night and they need to remove the fly-tipping without any more delay.”

Bob Dorris MSP said he would be chasing the issue up with the council.

A spokesman for the council said: “We fully understand the distress caused by those so insensitive to others they think fly-tipping in a place of remembrance is in any way acceptable.

“We are working to clear this debris and bollards will be installed once our own vehicles have been able to remove the fly-tipped items from the cemetery.

“Ahead of these bollards being installed, a temporary road block is being put in place to help prevent those guilty of the fly-tipping from returning.”

He added: “I am aware that there have been some issues with fly-tipping as highlighted previously by the Evening Times and it appeared as if the council were taking action to resolve the matter.

“However given that has clearly not happened I’ll be getting onto the City Council as a matter of urgency.”to have the mess cleared up as soon as possible and to request an update on what preventative measures they will now take.

“I’d like to thank the Evening Times for drawing this to my attention”.
